How much life insurance do I need?

Start with the expenses your family would need help covering, then account for resources already available. Your estimate stays in this page; no contact details are needed.

Your starting estimate

Estimated coverage gap$500,000

A planning estimate in today's dollars, not a quote or recommendation. A $0 result does not establish that you have no need for insurance.

Use household needs, not just a salary multiple

Income replacement is one part of the picture. Include unpaid caregiving that would need to be replaced, debts, childcare or education goals, and final expenses. Only subtract savings that are genuinely available for these needs.

An example

If a household needs $40,000 per year for 10 years, plus $200,000 for debt and other costs, and has $100,000 available, a simple starting estimate is $500,000. This is a hypothetical calculation, not a recommended benefit amount.

What the estimate leaves out

The calculator uses today's dollars and does not model inflation, investment returns, taxes, survivor benefits, or changing expenses. Employer coverage may end when a job changes. Review the estimate after major life events and before applying.
